About

As the very first church built in Albany, Oregon, Albany Methodist has a storied and proud past. As the years have passed and the times have changed, Albany Methodist has built upon this wonderful history while staying relevant to each new generation. Albany Methodist is a member of the United Methodist Church, a denomination that has churches in every country on earth. We believe in embracing both the old and new and you will find our worship to be both comfortably grounded and refreshingly modern.

God calls each of us to a closer walk together. We believe that God is still at work in the world, especially in the human heart. We are a growing community of faith that sees each person as necessary and unique. We are building a congregation in which all are welcomed and treasured as we follow the way of Christ in this challenging modern world.

What We Believe

As United Methodists, we have an obligation to bear a faithful Christian witness to Jesus Christ, the living reality at the center of the Church’s life and witness. To fulfill this obligation, we reflect critically on our biblical and theological inheritance, striving to express faithfully the witness we make in our own time.

Distinctive Emphases

John Wesley and the early Methodists were particularly concerned about inviting people to experience God’s grace and to grow in their knowledge and love of God through disciplined Christian living. They placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as “practical divinity” has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today.

The distinctive shape of our theological heritage can be seen not only in this emphasis on Christian living, but also in Wesley’s distinctive understanding of God’s saving grace. Although Wesley shared with many other Christians a belief in salvation by grace, he combined them in a powerful way to create distinctive emphases for living the full Christian life.

Grace

Our United Methodist heritage is rooted in a deep and profound understanding of God’s grace. This incredible grace flows from God’s great love for us. Did you have to memorize John 3:16 in Sunday school when you were a child? There was a good reason. This one verse summarizes the gospel: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” The ability to call to mind God’s love and God’s gift of Jesus Christ is a rich resource for theology and faith.”

Worship with us

Here at Albany Methodist we celebrate! We celebrate God’s great love for each of us. We celebrate all ages and stages of life. We celebrate each person’s faith journey as they grow and deepen in faith. We celebrate our historic past, our vibrant present and our exciting future. We invite you to come and join us as we worship and celebrate!

Our worship celebration happens each Sunday at 10:30am in our Sanctuary. Each Sunday is different. One Sunday we might have contemporary praise music, the next might be contemplative or traditional. Most Sundays, you’ll hear both the piano and our mighty pipe organ. Regardless, each worship service is accessible and grounded. All (and we do mean all!) are welcome to join us for worship, or any of our church activities.
